Conferences

Expanding Your Knowledge

The residency conducts regularly scheduled conferences and teaching opportunities at which each resident's attendance is expected. Residents are encouraged to make every effort to attend as many conferences as possible, recognizing the amount of time and effort that goes into scheduling and presenting conferences. Many presenters take time away from their busy practices to make a special trip to SAN.

A general description of conferences follows:

Noon Conferences

Noon conferences cover the full spectrum of family medicine, inpatient and outpatient, including obstetrics, internal medicine and critical care, pediatrics, and neonatology, surgery, radiology, pharmacology, and practice management.  Faculty and volunteer specialists provide daily lectures year-round.  In addition, the following special conferences occur monthly:

Outpatient Case Conference:  Designed to discuss ongoing complex outpatient medical cases, the goal is to establish a differential diagnosis and to suggest additional diagnostics and/or therapeutic therapies.

Inpatient Morbidity and Mortality Conference:  The goal of this conference is to review adverse events and mistakes from the inpatient setting in a supportive environment so that systems may be improved and all can learn from other's mistakes.

Ethics Conference:  Co-attended by the Chaplaincy Residency, residents from either program present cases with ethical questions to the group.

Nursing Home Rounds

PGY II and PGY III residents meet monthly with a faculty facilitator and receive two lectures on geriatric topics followed by individual rounding on at least two nursing home residents.

Practice Management

Led by our residency administrator, residents early in the PGY III year participate in two weeks of practice management training via lectures, discussion and hands-on activities.  This coincides with initial planning for jobs after graduation for most residents and is highly rated.

Thursday Teaching Conferences

In regards to didactic experiences, the Program tries to wed real world experiences and educational opportunities with our dedication to teaching. Thus, we have developed our Thursday Teaching program. On every third Thursday of the month, the faculty cover the services so that all the residents can break away and devote their time and attention to didactic learning. In addition, each teaching session is organized by one of our third-year residents. This gives the seniors a chance to focus on special areas of interest and to gain experience with arranging and presenting medical education events. We have found an additional bonus in that these Teaching Days have become social events where residents on various rotations can "catch up" with each other.

Resident-Faculty Forum is held on first Thursday from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. and offers an opportunity for informal discussion of residency issues.

Behavioral Science Hour

The entire residency meets after the Resident/Faculty Forum for one hour every other month for additional behavioral science teaching, usually in similar format with some role-playing.

Procedural Hour

Alternating with the Behavioral Science Hour, the entire residency meets every other month for procedural training, both inpatient and outpatient skills.

The OB/Perinatal Conference is held at St. Anthony's North every Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. in the Aspen B room. Residents on the obstetrical service are required to attend.

Family Medicine Center-Based Teaching

OB Ultrasound clinic is held one day per week for PGY I residents on the Outpatient Family Medicine rotation and Practice Skills rotations.  Additional opportunities are available for the interested resident..

Colposcopy clinic is held one day per week for PGY III residents on the Gynecology rotation.  Additional opportunities are available for the interested resident.

Longitudinal Counseling Supervision is conducted during the PGY II and III years and provides one-on-one mentoring to enhance resident skills in counseling patients regarding emotional and lifestyle concerns.

Intern Support Group and Balint Groups

These groups provide a confidential forum for residents to share experiences of their training. The Intern Support Group meets monthly during intern year and Balint meets monthly throughout the three years of residency training.

The Rocky Mountain Research Forum

This is an all day annual event in the spring when PGY III residents present their research projects.
