St. Anthony North Hospital
When it comes to hospitals, the Residency enjoys a small community-based hospital in which the residency is the single largest inpatient provider.
The Family Medicine Center - New Clinic
Residents spend increasing time in their Family Medicine Center over their three years in the program:
First year — 1-2 half days per week
Second year — 2-3 half days per week
Third year — 4 half days per week
Residents, faculty, nurses, physician assistants, and office staff are organized into teams to provide continuity of care for patients and arrange management plans for patients and families with special needs. Each resident has a partner, and partners see each other's FMC patients when needed.
At least one board certified family practice preceptor is always available in the FMC. Precepting duties are shared by full- and part-time faculty and community physicians, many of whom are alumni of our program. The teaching focus is on family physicians training family physicians.
In addition to family physician preceptors, residents are supported in their patient care by a team of faculty psychologists, health promotion specialists, a pharmacist, and a social worker. All take an active role in patient care, see patients with residents to deal with specific problems and provide individual and group teaching in their respective specialties.
Our patient populations are ethnically diverse. They seek care for a variety of medical problems which represent the spectrum of care from newborns to geriatrics, including a substantial obstetrics practice. All full-time faculty have hospital OB privileges, advise residents on pre-natal care issues and assist at deliveries. There are many patients with psychosocial problems and a team of psychologists and social workers is available on a full-time basis to assist residents in dealing with these issues. It is not uncommon for residents to be caring for patients from three generations of the same family.
The commitment of the St. Anthony North Hospital to the care of the underserved is actualized in our practice. Over half of our patients receive Medicaid or a charity discount. We also see insured patients, those covered by Medicare, HMOs, PPOs, and a variety of other commercial plans. As the practices grow, the variety of patients and their problems assures a challenging and rewarding case mix.
